title “What is it?” with text: “Shielding is a concept created by Autistic advocate, Katie Munday. The concept suggests that shielding is an act of expressing or projecting your authentic self, to be unashamedly you. In doing so, you control or attempt to control the space around you in order to more easily be yourself i.e. who can be around you and in what way.”

title “The Impacts” with text: “Whilst shielding and being your authentic self is a positive thing, it can be quite draining to maintain. Keeping up the shield against abuse, discrimination and those that aim to put us down for being our wonderfully weird selves can be exhausting, similar to masking. It is also from a position of privilege in which someone is able to safely shield and be openly Autistic without danger or a threat to their well-being - something we must be conscious of.”
